We stood by a vertical ring of light, like a full-length mirror, that revealed a slope of orange trees and swaying grasses beyond it. I drew my hood on to keep my delicate skin out of the sunset on the other side, double-checking that I had my magical bangle in my pocket. My grimoire and coin pouch were tucked in beside it, but everything else I bought in Aerie would stay here in my room, awaiting my return.

“I suppose there’s no point in asking if you want to come to the castle for a while and see your son?” I asked James.

“I wish that I could, but the time will come eventually. Until then, I know he is in good hands.”

“If you mean mine, I probably won’t even see him now. He will have accepted the marriage alliance with Xanthe, and I’ll be just another of his loyal subjects.”

“I highly doubt that, Camille,” he offered, bending slightly to take my hand and hold it in his, cupping his other one over the top. “I do not see a bond in Aerik’s future, or I would step in to prevent it. You know the path that lies before him.”

“And what if he does marry her? Will that obliterate the path?”

“That is a long and complicated answer,” he said, exhaling with a gentle laugh. “But, if he does, in fact, forge a bond and you feel at all cast aside, make your way to the First Gate once more and I will leave instruction with Lord Undred to bring you directly to Aerie.”

“Thanks. I appreciate that.”

“And remember”—he tipped in slightly and brought his lips to my ear, his long hair brushing my cheek, while the scent of leather and the cinnamon musk of Old Spice ignited my senses—“I am wiser and more powerful than the young king—”

“Noted,” I said, smiling back up at him.

“And my offer to take you on as a wife still stands, as does the one to reverse this curse,” he added, pressing my white braid with its fine glass beads between his thumb and index finger. “You can be reborn in the nexum, as a fae, if you only say the word.”

“Thank you,” I said earnestly. “I kind of like immortality though, and I need this blood to help in the night garden.”

“Very well.” He bowed once, lifting my hand a little to kiss the back, right above the crescent moon ring. “Safe journey then, my new friend. And I shall return here on the next new moon if you wish to visit with me.”

Everything about Aerie was magical, and if you add to that how King James was funny and kind, and that he found me utterly amusing and entertaining, there wasn’t a reason on God’s good earth why I wouldn't go back. Everyone liked being around people who enjoyed their company.

“I’ll be back,” I promised. “And thank you for the note. I wasn’t sure Aerik would believe my word alone. Not right now.”
